What is GEO? A 12-point checklist for getting cited in AI search
Mert · · 2 min read
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is optimizing content so that systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews cite it as a source in their answers. It does not replace SEO; it builds on it.
Why did GEO become its own topic?
Search is no longer just ten blue links. AI assistants read several sources, write one answer and name some of those sources. A 2023 study by Princeton and Georgia Tech researchers reported that adding statistics, quotations and sources could raise visibility by up to 40% on the queries tested (arXiv 2311.09735).
The 12-point GEO checklist
Findability
- Allow OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot and Bingbot in robots.txt. Blocking only training bots (GPTBot, CCBot) does not affect visibility.
- Check that your firewall (Cloudflare, hosting “bot protection”) does not send these bots to a challenge page.
- Publish sitemap.xml with real lastmod dates and submit it to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools; ChatGPT search is known to draw on Bing’s index too.
- Add an llms.txt file summarizing your site.
Trust and entity
- Add a logo, address and at least three official profiles via sameAs (LinkedIn, Instagram, Google Business Profile) to your Organization or LocalBusiness schema.
- Show each article’s author and update date visibly and in schema.
- Link privacy, terms and contact pages from the footer.
Quotable content
- Give each section a question heading with a 1–3 sentence direct answer right below it.
- Back claims with numbers: durations, price ranges, percentages, counts.
- Link to the source of your information; official and academic sources are strongest.
- Present comparisons as tables.
- Open the page with a 15–80 word paragraph summarizing the topic.
How do I measure results?
Our free GEO test measures most of these points automatically and lists gaps in priority order. Your actual citations in AI answers can be tracked by regularly asking assistants questions about your industry and noting the sources they cite.
